ESCAPE FROM RUSSIA 

PART ONE

INT. MIKE GROVES'S DINING ROOM - AT THE WINDOW - EVENING

Mike stands at the window, trying to see her presence as he watches the rain force its way through the atmosphere. Large raindrops pound the glass and streams of water cloud his vision, yet Mike strains to see her from afar.

MIKE GROVES
When will I meet her? My mind keeps asking me that question. And for the moment, I have no answer.
(looking out the window at the rain speaking to himself)

INT. A FOUNDRY IN RUSSIA - NADIA'S FATHER STANDING AT A MOLD - DAY - MORNING

Nadia's father is standing at a mold waiting for hot molten metal to be poured into the mold when the cables snap, and the container of molten metal crushes him.

EXT. NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - AFTERNOON - SAME DAY - FRONT DOOR

A policeman knocks on the door.

EXT. NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - BACKYARD - MORNING - SAME DAY 

Nadia's mother is working in the backyard garden when she hears knocking at the front door.  She gets up and walks around to the front of the house.

EXT. NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - MORNING - SAME DAY - FRONT OF THE HOUSE

Nadia's mother greets the policeman.

NADIA'S MOTHER
May, I help you?

EXT. NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - BACKYARD - MORNING - SAME DAY

Nadia is in the backyard playing with her dolls.  She hears her mother screaming and crying.

EXT. NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - BACKYARD - MORNING - SAME DAY

Nadia's playing with her dolls. 

NADIA'S MOTHER
No!  Oh my God. NO!
(coming from the front of the house)

Nadia gets up and rushes to the front of the house.

EXT. THE FRONT OF NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - MORNING - SAME DAY

When Nadia reaches the front, she sees her mother on her hands and knees crying.  The policeman tries to help the woman up, but she pulls away.

POLICEMAN
Ma mm. Please, we have to go. I'm so sorry for your loss, but the Undertaker is waiting. Please, ma mm.

EXT. THE FRONT OF NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - MORNING - SAME DAY

Nadia quickly runs to her mother and wraps her arms around her.

NADIA 
Mama, what's wrong? Tell me.

NADIA'S MOTHER
Your father had an accident at the foundry, Nadia. He won't be coming home,

EXT. THE FRONT OF NADIA'S HOUSE IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN RUSSIA - MORNING - SAME DAY

Of course, Nadia doesn't understand. She only knows her father won't be coming home, but for how long was he going to stay away?

NADIA
Mama, but when will he come home?

she asks, as her body shakes and tears drip down her cheeks.

NADIA'S MOTHER
I told you, he's not coming home. That's it. Don't ask me again.  You hear?
